Your first MMA class: what to expect and how to prepare

September 27, 2026 · 6 min read

Two fighters training MMA inside an octagon

Walking into a mixed martial arts gym for the first time is nerve-wracking for almost everybody. The good news: your first class is far more about learning to move than it is about fighting. Here is exactly what happens, and how to get the most out of it.

Before you arrive

Book a free trial from our contact page and pick a beginner-friendly session from the class schedule. Arrive ten minutes early so a coach can show you around, check for injuries and lend you gloves.

What the class looks like

Expect a structured warm-up, then stance and movement, a few basic strikes and a simple takedown or escape. Our MMA program is built so beginners never spar in their first months.

What to bring

Athletic clothes, water, a towel and a mouthguard if you have one. That is it.

After class

Most people feel it in their shoulders and hips the next day. Rest, eat well and come back within the week — consistency matters more than intensity.
