Watching a barber switch between five tools in ten minutes can look like showmanship. Every tool has a specific job, and knowing them helps you ask for exactly what you want.
Clippers
The workhorse. Guards from 0 to 8 set the length, and the lever fine-tunes it between guard sizes. Clippers create fades, short sides and bulk removal.
Trimmers
Smaller, sharper and used without guards for outlines: the hairline, around the ears and the neck. This is what makes a cut look crisp.
Shears and thinning shears
Scissors do the work on top and on longer hair. Thinning shears remove weight without changing length, which is how thick hair is made to sit flat.
The straight razor
Used for the final detail on a line-up and for traditional shaves. A fresh blade every client, always.
When you ask for "scissors on top, number two on the sides", you are now speaking the barber's language.
