Skin fade vs taper: which one suits you?

Fades and tapers both get shorter towards the neck and ears, which is why people mix them up. The difference is how far the short part goes and how much skin you see.

The taper

A taper only shortens the hairline itself: the sideburns and the nape. Everything above stays at length. It is conservative, grows out gracefully and suits offices and anyone who does not want to visit every two weeks.

The skin fade

A skin fade takes the sides and back right down to bare skin, then blends up into the length. It is sharper and more modern, and it needs upkeep: expect to book every two to three weeks.

Choosing by head shape

  • Round faces: a mid or high fade adds height and length
  • Long faces: a low fade or a taper keeps proportions balanced
  • Strong jaw: almost anything works, so choose by lifestyle

Still unsure? Ask for a low taper first. It is easy to go shorter at the next visit, and impossible to go longer.
