Beard oil and beard balm get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. Knowing which one you need saves money and gives you a better-looking beard.
What beard oil does
Oil is for the skin underneath. It stops the itch in the first weeks of growth, prevents flakes and softens coarse hair. Three or four drops, warmed between your palms, worked into the skin first and then through the length.
What beard balm does
Balm is oil plus butter and wax. It conditions too, but its real job is hold: it tames flyaways and keeps a longer beard in shape all day.
Which do you need?
- Short beard or stubble: oil only
- Medium beard with stray hairs: oil in the morning, a little balm on top
- Long beard: both, every day
Apply after a shower when the pores are open, and always comb or brush through afterwards so the product is spread evenly.
