Replacing a working system to save energy rarely pays back as fast as the brochure suggests. Most of the easy savings are sitting in how the equipment you already own is being run.
Start with the thermostat setpoint. Every degree lower costs meaningfully more to hold, and a room at seventy-four with decent air movement feels the same as one at seventy-one without it.
Then look at the filter. A clogged one makes the fan work harder and the coil colder, which is both expensive and the fastest route to a frozen system. Once a month, hold it up to a light.
Finally, keep the outdoor unit clear. Two feet of space on every side, no shrubs pressed against the coil, and no decking built over the top of it. Heat has to go somewhere.
