The honest question

Worth mending, or time to swap it?

Almost every caller wants this settled before anything else. Here is the reasoning our engineers apply on the doorstep, so you can weigh it up in advance.

Mending makes sense while

  • The unit has fewer than nine summers behind it
  • Nothing major has been replaced before now
  • The culprit is a wearing item rather than the compressor
  • The bill sits comfortably below a quarter of a new install
  • The pipework and mounting are still in decent shape

Swapping wins once

  • You are facing a second serious fault past year twelve
  • The system still runs on a gas that is no longer made
  • The compressor or the coil itself has given up
  • Electricity bills rise yearly while rooms feel warmer
  • Instalments on a new unit land near the repair figure

Ask us anything

The questions our phone hears daily

Why is my unit blowing air that simply is not cold?

Three culprits account for the vast majority: a failed run capacitor stopping the compressor while the fan carries on, a condenser choked with dust and cottonwood, or refrigerant that has slowly escaped. Pressures tell us which within twenty minutes, and only one of the three is expensive.

Do I pay anything if I decide against the repair?

You pay the diagnosis fee and nothing more, and you keep the written findings and the readings to show anyone else. Accept the work on the day and that fee comes straight off the invoice.

Can you top up the gas and leave it at that?

Refrigerant does not get consumed, so a low charge always means it has gone somewhere. Pumping more in without sealing the escape wastes your money and vents gas into the atmosphere. We locate and repair the leak first, then weigh in an accurate charge.

How frequently should a system be serviced?

Once each spring covers a domestic split used through the warm months. Shops, salons and anything running most of the year benefit from a second visit in autumn. Missing it seldom breaks anything overnight; it quietly shortens compressor life and pushes your running cost up.
