The bathroom is where the serious falls happen: hard surfaces, water, low light and a sequence of movements that all involve turning while standing.
Start with the three cheapest changes. A non-slip mat inside the bath or shower. A raised toilet seat with arms. A nightlight on the route from the bed to the bathroom, on a sensor rather than a switch.
Then fit grab rails — properly, into a stud or with the right fixings for the wall type, never into tile alone. A rail that comes away in someone’s hand is worse than no rail at all.
Finally, look at what people reach for when there is no rail: towel radiators, sinks and shower doors. Anything that has clearly been used as a handhold is telling you exactly where a rail should go.
