Metal costs more on day one. Whether it costs more over the life of the roof depends on how long you are staying.
Architectural asphalt is the sensible default for most homes, and there is nothing second-rate about it: a well-installed shingle roof with proper ventilation will run twenty to twenty-five years without drama. Standing seam costs meaningfully more up front, and buys you two things — a service life closer to forty or fifty years, and the absence of exposed fasteners, which are the component that fails first on cheaper metal systems. If you are staying past the twenty-year mark, the maths usually favours metal. If you are not, it usually does not, and any roofer telling you otherwise is selling.
