A stain on a ceiling is the end of the story, not the beginning. Water travels along rafters and down sheathing before it finds somewhere to fall, so the entry point is often several feet uphill of the damage. We get into the attic where we can, look at the underside of the deck, and work backwards to the flashing detail, nail pop or perished pipe boot that actually let it in. Active leaks are triaged the same day we hear about them.
