FCL vs LCL: how to choose the right ocean freight option

August 17, 2026 · Ocean Freight

Containers stacked at an industrial port

Choosing between a full container (FCL) and shared container space (LCL) comes down to volume, budget and how quickly you need the goods.

When LCL makes sense

For shipments under roughly 13–15 cubic metres, LCL is usually cheaper because you pay only for the space you use. It suits small, regular orders and new suppliers.

When FCL wins

Once your cargo fills more than half a 20ft container, FCL is often the same price or cheaper — and it is faster, because there is no consolidation or deconsolidation at the hubs.

Risk and handling

FCL containers are sealed at origin and opened at destination, which reduces handling and the risk of damage. Fragile or high-value goods are almost always better in FCL.

Get both prices

Ask for an FCL and an LCL quote side by side. We do this as standard, so you can choose with the real numbers in front of you.
