Timber, stone or brick: choosing materials that age well

Materials that look perfect on handover day are not always the ones that look best in twenty years. We choose for the long view.

Timber

Untreated cedar and larch silver gracefully; painted timber needs repainting every few years. Detail it to shed water and it will outlast most claddings.

Stone

Local stone suits its landscape, weathers slowly and needs almost no maintenance. It costs more up front and less over the life of the building.

Brick

Reclaimed brick brings instant character and a lower carbon footprint. Lime mortar lets walls breathe and makes future repairs easier.
