Class 1, 2 or 3: what you can legally ride on a bike path

Class 1, 2 or 3: what you can legally ride on a bike path

Three classes, two questions: does it have a throttle, and where does the assistance stop? Class 1 is pedal-assist only, cutting out at 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle, still capped at 20. Class 3 is pedal-assist to 28 mph with no throttle.

Class 1 and 2 are welcome nearly everywhere a bicycle is. Class 3 is generally allowed on road and in bike lanes but excluded from shared-use paths in many jurisdictions, which is the distinction that catches people out.

Anything that assists above 28 mph, or that moves under throttle alone above 20, stops being a bicycle in the eyes of the law and becomes a moped — title, plate and insurance. We register those for you before handover.
