Arrested or served with a notice: the first twenty-four hours

What happens in the first day after an arrest shapes a great deal of what follows. A short, calm checklist.

Say less, not more

You are entitled to legal advice before an interview. Use it. An account given without advice, before disclosure is known, is very difficult to improve later.

Ask what the allegation actually is

There is a real difference between being arrested on suspicion, being interviewed under caution and being charged. Establish which one applies.

Call an advocate immediately

We answer urgent criminal enquiries the same day, including weekends. Early advice is almost always cheaper than late repair.
