Four unattended camera rigs went up at forty-eight metres and stayed there for nine months. One was struck by lightning. The other three recorded a canopy that no longer behaves like a single forest, because it is no longer a single forest.
What the rigs caught is adaptation in progress: hornbills crossing cleared ground their parents would never have risked, and gibbons using routes that did not exist a decade ago. Some of it is remarkable. None of it is good news.
This episode was cut almost entirely from footage nobody was present to film. The method, the failure rate, and the two things we would build differently are all in the field journal.
