You have the keys to your new home, but so might the previous owners, their dog walker, a contractor from three years ago and the realtor’s lockbox. Rekeying is the cheapest way to make sure only your keys open your doors.
What rekeying actually does
A keymaker removes the cylinder, swaps the small pins inside for a new combination and cuts new keys to match. Your lock looks and works exactly the same, but every old key stops working.
What it costs
Rekeying starts at around $25 per cylinder with new keys included. A typical house with a front door, back door and garage entry costs far less than buying three new locks.
When to replace instead
- The lock is worn, sticky or damaged.
- You want a higher security grade or a smart lock.
- The lock is a cheap builder-grade model with a short bolt.
Ask for every door to be keyed alike while you are at it. One key for the whole house is the upgrade new homeowners thank us for most.
