Pinewood Pavilion

A small holiday house among pines with a glowing entrance.

A family wanted a simple cabin for summers and long weekends that would barely disturb the forest.

The brief

The clients came to the studio with a site in Door County, WI, a fixed budget and a long list of the ways they wanted to live or work there. We spent the first weeks on site, recording sun paths, views, neighbours and drainage before drawing a single line.

The design

The pavilion stands on slender piers to protect tree roots, with a single long room opening onto a deck under the pines.

Materials and light

Dark-stained pine, a planted roof and big sliding doors that disappear into the walls.

Pinewood Pavilion was delivered on the agreed fee schedule, with the same lead architect from the first sketch to the final walkthrough.
