Architectural drawings are almost always lit from directly above. Real rooms are not. The kitchen gets used at seven in the morning and six in the evening; the living room mostly after four.
Testing the plan against the hour
For every room we note the hour it will be used most, then model the sun at that hour on the longest and shortest days. It changes window positions more often than you would expect.
A room is only as good as its worst hour of light.
