Got an IRS Notice? What to Do in the First 30 Days

An envelope from the IRS is stressful, but most notices are automated requests to confirm or correct something on your return. What matters most is responding before the deadline printed on the letter.

Your 30-day plan

  • Read the notice number in the top right corner — it tells you what kind of letter it is.
  • Compare the figures with your copy of the return.
  • Gather the documents that support your position.
  • Do not ignore it, even if you disagree.
  • Respond in writing, keep copies and send it by certified mail.

If the amount is large or the letter mentions an examination, talk to an enrolled agent or CPA before you reply. We can contact the IRS for you under a power of attorney.
