Smart locks and the night the battery dies

Smart locks are easy to buy and awkward to live with, and almost every complaint we get called out to falls into one of three categories that have nothing to do with the software.

It was not fitted square

A motorised bolt has far less torque than your wrist. A door that a mechanical lock tolerated for years will jam a smart lock within a month, and the app will report a failure that is really a hinge problem.

There is no keyed override

Buy the model with a physical key cylinder. Batteries die at inconvenient hours, and the alternative to a key is a locksmith at a night rate.

Nobody named the codes

Twelve codes called “user 1” through “user 12” is the same as having one shared code. Name them when you create them, and revoking access after a contractor leaves takes ten seconds instead of a rekey.
