Before you sign an insurance release, read this

A few days after an accident, many people receive a friendly call from the other driver’s insurer and an offer that sounds reasonable. Before you accept it, understand what you are signing.

A release is permanent

Signing a release ends your claim for good. If your injuries turn out to be worse than they first seemed, you cannot reopen it or ask for more.

Why the first offer is low

  • Your medical treatment is often not finished yet
  • Future lost wages and therapy are rarely included
  • Adjusters are measured on how little they pay

In our experience, settlements negotiated with a lawyer are routinely several times the first offer.

What to do instead

Keep every bill and record, do not give a recorded statement, and ask an attorney to review the offer. A free case review costs you nothing and can change the outcome.
