How we protect fast bowlers’ backs

Stress fractures in the lower back are the most common serious injury in young fast bowlers. Most are preventable. Here is how we keep our bowlers on the park.

1. Workload limits

Every bowler has a weekly ball count across nets and matches, logged in the player app. Spikes in workload are the biggest risk factor, so we plan the season, not just the week.

2. Action screening

Our physio and bowling coach film every bowler at the start of each term. Mixed actions are corrected early, before bad habits set in.

3. Strength and mobility

  • Two short gym sessions a week
  • Focus on hips, trunk and glutes
  • Recovery with ice baths after heavy days

Bowlers who follow the plan bowl quicker, for longer, and miss far fewer matches.
