Cold mornings find every weak spot in a car. These are the seven checks our technicians recommend before the first freeze.
- Battery test. Cold weather cuts battery capacity. A quick load test tells you if it will start on a frozen morning.
- Tire tread and pressure. Pressure drops as temperatures fall. Consider winter tires if you drive rural roads.
- Wiper blades. Replace streaking blades and fill up with winter washer fluid.
- Coolant mix. Make sure the antifreeze protects to well below zero.
- Brakes. Slippery roads need brakes that respond the first time.
- Lights. Shorter days mean every bulb counts.
- Emergency kit. Blanket, scraper, jumper cables and a phone charger.
