A watering plan for the first summer after planting

New planting does not want a little water often. It wants a lot, occasionally — enough to soak past the root ball and pull roots downward into the surrounding soil.

A long soak twice a week beats a daily sprinkle every time. Ten minutes with a hose on a slow trickle at the base of each plant is worth an hour of overhead spraying.
