7 study habits that actually stick

September 23, 2026 · Study Tips · 1 min read

Good study habits are not about willpower. They are about building small routines that make learning the default. These seven are the ones our mentors see working again and again.

1. Study in short, focused blocks

Twenty-five minutes of real focus beats two hours of half attention. Set a timer, close every other tab and take a five-minute break when it rings.

2. Test yourself instead of re-reading

Re-reading feels productive but rarely sticks. Close the book and write down everything you remember, then check what you missed.

3. Space your sessions out

Revisiting a topic after one day, three days and a week moves it into long-term memory far better than one long cram.

4. Teach it to someone else

Explaining a concept out loud shows you exactly where your understanding has gaps.

5. Keep one planner

Write every deadline in one place and review it every Sunday evening.

6. Sleep is part of studying

Your brain consolidates what you learned while you sleep. An all-nighter undoes the work you did.

7. Ask for help early

Your instructors and mentors want to hear from you in week two, not the night before the exam.
