How to Store Fresh Milk, Butter and Cheese at Home

Fresh, minimally processed dairy tastes wonderful, but it rewards a little care at home. These simple habits keep everything tasting its best for longer.

Milk

  • Store bottles on a middle shelf, not in the door where the temperature swings.
  • Keep the cap on tight so the milk does not absorb other fridge smells.
  • Give the bottle a gentle shake to mix the cream line back in.

Butter

Keep a small amount in a covered butter dish for spreading and the rest wrapped in the fridge. Butter also freezes perfectly for up to six months.

Farmhouse cheese

Never use cling film — cheese needs to breathe. Wrap it in waxed or baking paper, then place it in a loosely closed container in the vegetable drawer. Take it out half an hour before serving so the full flavour comes through.
