Every commission here starts with a paid outline of eight to fifteen pages. Clients occasionally ask whether we can skip it. We cannot, and the reason is straightforward: it is the cheapest place to be wrong.
The outline covers structure, voice, chapter order and — most importantly — the material that is still missing. That last section is usually the one that changes the project. It is where we discover that the book needs two more interviews, or that the story everyone assumed was chapter one is really chapter nine.
Rewriting an outline costs a week. Rewriting a manuscript costs a season. The outline is not a formality before the work; it is the part of the work where decisions are still affordable.
