Reading a condition report like a specialist

A condition report is the most useful document in any sale, and the one most bidders skim.

Words such as 'running at time of cataloguing' mean exactly that: the movement ran, but has not been serviced. Budget for a service if you plan to use the piece.

'Old restoration' is not a warning in itself. Almost every two-hundred-year-old object has been repaired. What matters is whether the repair was sympathetic and whether it affects value.

If a phrase is unclear, ask. Every report in our catalogues carries the name of the specialist who wrote it, and they will happily send more photographs.
