Air has to enter low at the soffit and leave high at the ridge, and both halves have to be open for either to work. Blocked soffit vents \u2014 usually buried under insulation pushed too far into the eave during a retrofit \u2014 are the single most common cause of a roof that fails ten years early. In summer the trapped heat bakes the underside of the deck and the shingles above it. In winter the same trapped air carries moisture up from the house and condenses it onto cold sheathing.
