We asked eleven editors to forward us every pitch they deleted in a single week. Two hundred and six arrived. Almost all of them failed for one of three reasons \u2014 and none of those reasons was the quality of the news.<\/p>\n

1. The subject line described the company, not the story<\/h2>\n

“Northwind Bio announces Series B” tells an editor what happened to you. “The clinic that stopped losing half its trial patients” tells them what their readers get. Editors decide in the inbox, not in the attachment.<\/p>\n

2. The first paragraph was a boilerplate<\/h2>\n

If the opening sentence could be pasted into any other release your company has ever sent, it will be read as exactly that. Lead with the thing only this announcement can say.<\/p>\n

3. Nobody could be interviewed<\/h2>\n

A story without a person is a listing. I cannot put a listing on the front of the section.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
