Class 1 is pedal-assist only, cutting out at 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle, still capped at 20. Class 3 is pedal-assist to 28 mph with no throttle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Class 1 and 2 are welcome nearly everywhere a bicycle is. Class 3 is generally allowed on road and in bike lanes but excluded from shared-use paths in many jurisdictions, which is the distinction that catches people out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything that assists above 28 mph, or that moves under throttle alone above 20, stops being a bicycle in the eyes of the law and becomes a moped \u2014 title, plate and insurance.
