In people with IBS they can draw water into the gut and ferment quickly, causing bloating, pain and changes in bowel habit.

The three phases

Restrict: swap high-FODMAP foods for low-FODMAP alternatives for two to six weeks

Reintroduce: test one FODMAP group at a time, over several days, while tracking symptoms

Personalise: bring back everything you tolerate and limit only your true triggers

Why it is not a forever diet

Many high-FODMAP foods feed beneficial gut bacteria. Staying on the restriction phase long-term can narrow your diet unnecessarily and may affect your gut microbiome. The reintroduction phase is where you learn what you actually react to, and for most people the list is shorter than they feared.

Because the process is detailed and symptoms overlap with other conditions, it works best alongside a dietitian and after your doctor has ruled out other causes.

[18
21,19,20
post-35","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gut-health","tag-fodmap","tag-gut-health","tag-ibs
["GET
